ABOUT THE AUTHOR -

Throughout her childhood, Rita J Webb traveled around the country with a book always in hand. Rita finally settled in Ohio where she attended college to study Computer Science and then began a career as a Software Test Analyst, a beautiful title for an empty position.

Rita's love for books and great stories pushed her to start writing when impending layoffs forced her to reconsider her dreams and goals. Having tested software for ten years, she wanted to create something more meaningful than a test manual, something that would move hearts.

MY REVIEW -

Adorable! This story was so much better than the blurb leads you to believe. It is so much more than that. I almost hated to copy and paste the book synopsis because I didn't want to mislead you. 

This is a fantasy, "Novella", only 67 pages long. Sometimes when I read a short story/novella I feel cheated, it leaves me wanting more. This story didn't do that. It felt complete. It wasn't lacking and - yes, it did leave me wanting more - more stories by her! Now normally I am not a huge fan of Fantasy, but I just loved this book and read it in two sittings. It was just such a sweet story.

This story tugged at my heart strings right away. I was in tears on the very first page. The whole book is very heartfelt.

"With both her small hands, Patches clutches her worn blanket, folded around some stale bread and a few rotten apples. It's all she has - save for the rags she wears.

If she drops it...

She mustn't. she must be good. Good girls are quiet."

This book, very much, has a fairytale quality to it. To me it felt like a cross between "Cinderella" and "Little Orphan Annie". I would love to see "Disney/Pixar to get its hands on this one!

The character development is excellent, especially for a short story! I had no trouble at all totally falling in love with little patches and later as a grown woman, Neophecia.

The descriptions in this story are equally as good.

"Pillars carved in different shapes - one is a girl with a fish tail for legs and another is a boy with wings - hold an overhang around the edges of the garden. I step out from under the shade, and the sunlight splashes on my face. Closing my eyes, I tilt my face up to catch the warmth on my skin."

"Where have I seen those eyes before? Memories, cold and clammy, claw at my skin like a snake trying to worm inside. I grip my stomach to keep from throwing up."

THE ALL-IN-ALL -
All in all this is a very sweet fairytale about an unwanted girl who struggles to belong and finally finds love - in many places. It has a little of everything - sadness, struggle, adventure, and love. 
This is a very clean book - no swearing, no sex. I think it would be fine for young teens.
