Fun Friday!

Winners! -
"Unending Devotion" by Jodi Hedlund - Margaret

And I screwed up again! Only not my fault this time!
For some reason the form for "Avra's God" was not working.
I thought it was strange that I was not getting any entries!
I always have tons of entries for all my giveaways.
I tested it and put my name in and it did not show up!
So next Fri. I will re-do the form and do the giveaway over again.
So if you signed up before please come back next week and try again.

The movie "Christmas With Holly" (based on "Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor") will be on ABC next Sunday, Dec. 9th!
You bet I'll be watching it.

Friends & Family interview #12
Introducing.... My Mom! Yes, for those of you who wondered, I really do have a mom. I was not just found under a cabbage leaf... was I?
My mom and I have had a long journey together (not that long!). When I was a teenager my mom and I did not get along that well at all. I ended up spending more time away from home than I did there. And it was really just as much my fault as it was hers. I was not an easy teen to live with.
But as we grew older we also grew closer! And now we get along great! We have a great time when my mom comes here to visit and I can honestly say that when I go down there - it is the best vacation for me!
My mom and I are very different! She has a beautiful home, she dresses nice, wears make-up, styles her hair, and eats meat LOL. I, on the other hand... well... basically I am a vegetarian hippie. I never wear make-up, wear the first thing my hand touches in my closet that day and look in the mirror shake out my hair and say "Yep good to go!".
But, surprisingly we don't really care about these differences anymore, or we just respect each other and live with them. We end up having a great time despite our differences! I guess thats what unconditional love is all about.

1. How long have you lived in your area?
Grew up in Upstate NY.  In 93 moved to Minnesota. The shopping was really good there though! When it was -42 and a high for the day of -20 I told my husband that as much as I like living here I do not want to retire here, I have had it with the cold and the snow.  So after some searching we moved to East Tennessee 7 years ago and we love it here....it just felt like home.   It reminds me of Upstate NY with the mountains and the rolling hills. It is really beautiful there! And the weather is almost perfect.

 2. What are the best things about living there and what are the worst?

Best: weather, the lake, the mountains.  We are 1 hour from the Smoky mountains, 2 minutes away from Tellico lake, can see it from my deck.  13 hours away from Upstate NY, 6 hours away from Memphis, 3 hours away from Atlanta and Nashville, 2 ½ from Asheville NC and 8 hours from the ocean.   I love looking out and seeing the snow on the mountains and not being in it.  Planting Pansy’s in the fall, I still laugh at that.  Yeah yeah yeah just keep bragging.

Worst: Being 13 hours away from family and not seeing them as often as I would like. :-(

 3. What is your favorite food to eat? And what is your favorite food to cook?

 Eat: Anything seafood Yum!
Cook: Don’t really like to cook except to try new recipes. Oh ya,  I like to make Homemade bread.

 4. What is your favorite smell or scent?

The fresh air after it rains. It just smells so clean outside.

 5. If you were given a week and all the money you need - how would you spend it?

I would buy a Carrera Porsche. I have always said that if I win the  lottery this is the first thing I would buy myself, so if I win I would not tell anyone but if you see driving one…I’m just saying.  I also would like go to Greece and Egypt.
I hope I see you driving one someday!

 6. What is the last music you listened to (and be honest!)?

Three Dog Nights – Black and White. So not like me at all but since I got my new car and it comes with Sirius Radio have been listening to the 60’s and 70’s music. I like Three Dog Night! Don't you just love Sirius radio? I would never be without it now!

 7. If you could give one million dollors to one charity, what would it be? and why?
Any Battered Women’s agency, there is so few safe havens and it leaves such a physiological and emotional mark, sometimes for life. And they need better advertising! Honestly I have no idea where any are in our area. So if anyone I knew needed one I wouldn't know where to send them. And thats sad.

8. What is the one thing around the house that you hate doing?

Weeding. Hate, hate, hate to weed and here the weeds grow so fast and I swear they grow all year long. I am still weeding in November because they are still growing! In fact Ken is mowing the lawn this afternoon. In Minnesota we would be shoveling snow! I don't really mind shoveling snow, it is very good exercise!

 9. What is your favorite thing to do for fun?

There are so many “favorite things” to do here in this community. Since we moved here we have so many friends, we have a beautiful home but sometimes it seems we are never home. To choose one is impossible.  Love to go to Dollywood, only 1 ¼ hours away.  Dinner with friends.  Going out with my husband.  Like to knit and crochet and read, especially Historical Fiction. Turn on the fireplace and curl up with a good book and a glass of wine.   Life is so good! Yes, you guys are very busy! But thats good! I am glad that you are enjoying life.

10. Surprise me!

That I am so very proud of both my daughters (they may already know this but I know I don’t tell them this enough). Awww, well you said it now!  :-)

  1. East Tenn is lovely :) Nice choice.

I can't wait to see this movie either Wendy. I'm such a sucker for Hallmark movies.

  2. Wendy -

Regarding your comment on the Battered Women's Shelters and advertising. They don't advertise in order to protect the women who go there. They are under radar for the sole purpose of protection from those they are running from.

If you ever ran into a situation that needed this type of service, dial 411 - they can get you the information you need!

    Sincerely,

    Your soon-to-be Social Worker niece!

    1. Yeah I guess I do understand that. I just don't think that every woman will know to call 411. You know?

  3. Glad to know that you and your mom are closer :)

So Lisa Kleypas' book-to-movie is this Sunday?! I haven't read the book yet!!! I'm so far behind!!!!

  4. The shelters are on the down low for the protection of the women. It would be the first person a batterer would go. I think the idea is that women would be directed to the shelters by police or social workers or something like that. It's almost like an unspoken screening process.

I really enjoyed your mom's interview. Great pictures too :)
