When Penny's boyfriend, El Paso County Sheriff Leo Tellez, comes to rescue Penny from the clutches of the law, he brings Adriana,the beautiful twin sister of Leo's dead wife. Penny is desperate to get out of jail to defend her relationship with Leo, but when she finally clears her name, she has to keep her word to the Marshal, and find Juan Rico first. While Penny is gone, Adriana lures Leo into a romantic encounter.
On the trail of Rico, Penny is kidnapped and dragged into Mexico by gun traffickers, along with their guns. This means certain death for Penny in a country where thousands of women have gone missing. Rebecca Jean Downey is a thriller author with her eyes on the U.S.-Mexico border. Inspiration for her novels are plucked right out of the headlines or from interviews with law enforcement sources, journalists and other experts on border crime. She and her husband, Mike, live in El Paso, Texas, with their two rescue dogs, Riley and Skye.

What is the hardest part of writing your book?
The hardest part about writing a novel is making sure my characters make decisions that are in line with their belief systems, or lack thereof. One of the weaknesses I see in TV detective shows is some of the lame reasons a suspect commits murder. I have a commitment to my antagonist to ensure that the reader thoroughly understands why someone would end another person’s life. The antagonist generally has some good qualities which I try to display… except in rare cases, where, of course, these suspects really are bad! People are multidimensional, and an author must ensure that all of her characters are fully real.
What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological and logistical) in bringing your book to life?
For both of my novels, The Middle Eye and Devil Eye, I write about Texas, New Mexico and Mexico, and this creates some logistical challenges. Because of the dangers I Mexico, I don’t travel there unless I can help it. The U.S. Department of State still has a travel warning in effect for Mexico due to threats posed by organized criminal groups and their lines of commerce such as child trafficking, drug smuggling and gun running. In 2014, 85 innocent Americans were killed while visiting Mexico. I must rely on my memory, maps and Internet photos and videos to tell the story. I also have several friends who are news reporters in Mexico, which helps keep me up-to- date on the most current news of criminal behavior.
Do you write an outline before every book you write?
I do a mental outline before I start. In other words, I know how I want the story to end. The second act is where things get dicey because as I begin writing, the characters sometimes have their own way, and break free from the outline.
