The Soup and Bread Cookbook -
Beatrice Ojakangas

5 Stars!!!!!

ABOUT THE BOOK -
From one of America’s most prolific and beloved cookbook authors comes a compendium of unique recipes for a universally appealing subject. This broad collection of soups, broths, bisques, and chowders ranges from summer coolers and hearty, warming stews to smooth, creamy soups and fiery broths. Marked by their straightforward preparation, accessible ingredients, and original pairings, Ojakangas’s collection not only taps into her Scandinavian heritage but into flavorful soups from around the world—there’s Swedish Pea, Morroccan Vegetable, Borscht, and Chicken and Dumplings to Feijoida, French Onion, Italian Meatball, and Asian Lemon Ginger.
The bread recipes alone could fill a cookbook. Loaves, buns, sticks, and flatbreads are here, along with pretzels, pitas, toasts and focaccias. Organized by season and complemented by evocative photographs, The Soup & Bread Cookbook is an ideal volume for anyone who takes comfort in the essential pleasures of a bowl of soup and warm bread.

MY REVIEW -
This might just be the best soup and bread cookbook ever!
There are so many recipes in here! And there is such a wide variety. I started out bookmarking all the soups and breads I wanted to try, but I was bookmarking every other page. So I just gave up and decided I will just have to go through the whole book - recipe by recipe, until I have tried them all (well almost). As most of you know by now, I am a pseudo vegetarian and there are lots of great veg. recipes in here. There are a few with meat but one could just leave out the meat.

The bread recipes include - yeast breads, flat breads, rolls, muffins, bread sticks, sweet breads, just about anything you could think of.
Some I am going to try -
Sesame sunflower breadsticks
Cheddar cheese onion scones
Parmesan garlic bread
Asian style flatbread
Parmesan & herb toasted baguette toasts
Bazlama (Turkish flatbread)

The soups range from seafood chowders to good ol' chicken soup, stews, creams, cold, hot and even spicy.
Some I am going to try -
New potato and chive soup
Springtime minestrone
Simple salmon chowder (YUM!)
Cream of summer veg. soup
10-minute chickpea-tomato soup
Smooth spiced broccoli soup
Maine corn chowder
Broccoli & cauliflower cheddar soup
Spicy black bean soup

Now you also all know that I do not like to cook! but I have to tell you I can't wait to try some of these. I am so excited  to have all these soups and breads all under one cover! There is 312 pages of recipes and pictures. There are beautiful full color pictures - a few, but there are never enough to satisfy me. There could have been a lot more. But still a very excellent cookbook!

This is a run-out-and-buy-it-now cookbook! So, go on, run!

  1. You left me drooling. It's rainy and a bit chilly here today and soup and bread sound divine right now.

BTW I love this new feature/meme.
