After The End - Opening discussion

Thought questions - please also feel free to comment on others comments.

1. Have you ever joined a formal read-along before?
I never have! I have read books and joined discussions but read them in my own time. and I have read books at the same time as maybe one friend but never as a group like this.

2. How excited were you to start this?
Well since I am hosting - I was very excited! So much so, I think I will do this maybe 1-2 times a year! I like reading at the same time as others and talking about it.

3. Have you ever read an "End of the world" type book or a "Dystopian" type book?
I read the "Life As We Knew It" series and loved it! I also read "Shattered" and also loved it! I still need to read the rest of the series.

4. If you were at the end of the world - What one person would you want with you?
As much as I love my daughter I wouldn't want her to go through that.
I would choose my husband because I really trust that he, if anyone, could keep us alive. He is tough and strong and would be great in survival mode. He would know what to do.

5. What 5 items would you want with you?
A knife
Flint fire started
Water purifier
Bow and arrows
A really long book!

6. Without giving anything away - Have you started reading yet? where are you? And what form are you reading?
Yes, I started reading right away.
I am on chapter 9
I am reading the kindle e-book

I have but I don’t know that I would call them ‘formal’. Just a group of friends reading and chatting.

I love a good apocalypse or post-apocalypse book so I’m looking forward to it.

    3. Have you ever read an "End of the world" type book or a "Dystopian" type book?
Of course! I’ve read a bunch and I have a bunch more on my tbr list.

    4. If you were at the end of the world - What one person would you want with you?
    *shrugs*

    5. What 5 items would you want with you?
Machete, fire starter, something to boil water in, warm/water resistant clothes, hiking boots

    2. This type of book is right up your alley! I told glen what we were all reading and he said "Jen must be lovin this!"
Shrugs??? You are gonna come back and fill that in aren't you?!?!
Ahh see between my water purifier and your container...

    3. Clothes and boots are a must have! Why didn't I think of that?

    4. Update: I'm up to ch24(ish) now. I decided to listen to the audiobook so I didn't read it in a day or two (looks at Wendy).

No Wendy, I don't believe I will fill in my *shrugs* response lol. I'll leave you wondering ;)

Vonnie, I kind of cheated and used Wendy's list as a base and went from there lol.

  2. 1. Have you ever joined a formal read-along before?
Nope! This is my first time!

    2. How excited were you to start this?
Very excited! I love the idea of reading the same thing at the same time as other people and then getting their take on it!

    3. Have you ever read an "End of the world" type book or a "Dystopian" type book?
I read the "Life As We Knew It" series and it moved me so much! The story drew me in so much that I had a hard time coming out of their world and back to my own reality!

    4. If you were at the end of the world - What one person would you want with you? Hmm, well I would say my husband but as much as I love him, he is not exactly the outdoorsy, survival type. OH! I would take Boston Rob because he has been on Survivor like a billion times so he ought to know how it is done right?

    5. What 5 items would you want with you?
A knife, essential oils for medicinal purposes, flint, a book of maps so I would know where to travel should I need to, a backpack full of canned soup!

    6. Without giving anything away - Have you started reading yet? where are you? And what form are you reading?
Yes, I started reading right away and am already on chapter 21. I am debating on whether I should take a break and wait for the discussion before I read some more, or continue reading and take notes so I know what to comment on and what not to comment on.
I downloaded the book to my nook, and also used my free credit to download it to audible so I can listen to it on my way to work. Today I listen to several chapters while at the lake with my husband, celebrating our first anniversary!

    1. I am so glad you are excited!
Hahaha love the Boston Rob comment! You are right, he would be good! Can you see him and dad taking care of us? We would rock!
I still think of those books too. Especially the girl in the elevator (don't want to give it away) but that really affected me!
Oh good, so you're bringing the soup and oils! Lol
You are surprising me with how fast you are reading this!
      You go girl!

    2. Oh Wendy, I just started tearing up thinking about the girl in the elevator.

Like Ashley said, the Life As We Knew It series' world was really hard to get out of. I still think about it today.

    3. Lol to Boston Rob! I think I would like to be with him too.

    4. You may join us Vonnie! We'll all survive together!

  3. Let's see if this works...Google was being dumb and would not let me post my responses.

    1. Have you ever joined a formal read-along before?
Yes, I've actually co-hosted two: one for Shadow and Bone, the other for Beast and Beauty. Didn't have many participants, but I did have a lot of fun :)

    2. How excited were you to start this?
I was excited when Wendy contacted me. I really like being introduced to new fiction, especially dystopian/post-apocalyptic books.

    3. Have you ever read an "End of the world" type book or a "Dystopian" type book?
I've read many in fact. Some of my favorites are: Life as We Knew It, Eve of Awakening, The Hunt Series, The War Inside, The Giver, Shadow and Bone, Unwind Distology, etc...

    4. If you were at the end of the world - What one person would you want with you?
Gosh, I don't know...I would hate to live in a post-apocalyptic world: constantly looking behind your back to survive. If I have to chose, I guess it would be my mom since she has the brains.

    5. What 5 items would you want with you?
    Water purifier
    Knife
    Gun
    Survival Guide
Those long lasting foods in case of disaster

    6. Without giving anything away - Have you started reading yet? where are you? And what form are you reading?
Yes, but I only read the first chapter. I really need to concentrate on reading so I could catch up before I leave to the land of the corn.
I checked a copy from the library.

    1. A gun! Yeah, but then of course you'd need bullets. Unless you are just gonna hit people over the head with it.

      Delete
    2. Dang! I forgot the bullets! Oh well, I think I'll be too scared to actually used the gun. Maybe I could just threaten people with it?

      Delete
    3. Don't let Wendy burst your bubble! You can scavenge for bullets...or make your own...after all I'm sure your survival book will tell you how!

      Delete
    4. Yeah! I would pay to see Vonnie make her own bullets!

Oh yeah! This us a make believe world! LOL
You go Vonnie! Make those bullets!

      Delete
    5. Ah, piece of cake. All you need to do is melt down some metal, pour it into molds, and tada old fashioned bullets. Or stumble on a cache of black powder and refill shells...either way

      Delete
    6. Hahaha! You girls are funny! Old fashion it is!

  4. Wendy, I hope you do continue to host read-alongs. They are so much fun when done with a few people!

Now...if it's the end-of-the-world, are you going to have enough time to read a book? I think that I'll be too busy trying not to get killed.

    1. Haha well, I was thinking that there would be some down time, and I wanted something fun, maybe a board game would be a better choice, unless of course at the very end I am all alone :-(

    2. I guess after a few years of the world ending there would be some down time. I hope you are not alone. That would suck.
