Memory House (Book 1) - Bette Lee Crosby

4 Stars!

A MAGICAL LOVE STORY... Memory House, a place where friendship turns to love and love lasts forever.
Ophelia Browne knows a memory can outlive its owner. She knows because she's been granted the unique gift of finding and caring for those forgotten memories. But now she's nearing ninety, and needs to find a successor - soon.
When broken-hearted Annie Cross shows up on the doorstep of The Memory House Bed and Breakfast, Ophelia knows she is the one. The two women forge a bond of friendship as they sip magical dandelion tea and share stories. When Annie starts to sense the memories Ophelia is delighted, but then a thread of violence begins to unravel and she fears things have gone too far.

Yay!!! A magical Realism book! I think this is my favorite genre. So much fun.  If you are a fan of Sarah Addison Allen or Alice Hoffman (which I am) you will like this book.

I got goosebumps on the second page! And it continued like that all through the book. There was a very good original story line. It was fun, interesting and on-the-edge-of-your-seat reading.

Great characters and equally great development. I loved Annie, the main character. I think she made some very good choices. I honestly didn't know which way this book was going to go, the ending was a surprise for me. The author does a great job of keeping the pace going and even throws in a few twists and turns.

But is was really the "magical" qualities of the book that did it for me! This was a total (but pleasant) surprise,  I did not know the book was going to be like that.
"Ophelia gives a soft chuckle. “No, that’s my potpourri.” She points a gnarled finger toward the glass bowl sitting atop a tiny three-legged table.
“Oh.” Annie nods. “Made from dried roses?”
Ophelia shakes her head. “No roses. It’s mostly passion flower and vanilla.”
Annie takes a deep breath. “Funny, I don’t smell vanilla at all.”
“You wouldn’t unless vanilla was your favorite fragrance. It’s a remembrance blend. It reminds you of something that’s brought happiness.”
Annie stops, turns back and sniffs the air again. This time she catches the scent of lilacs. It is so powerful that if she closes her eyes she will imagine herself a child again, still living in the house where the fragrance of summertime lilacs drifted through her bedroom window.
The thought of a potpourri that changes scent teases Annie’s mind. As she follows Ophelia down the hallway she asks, “Would it smell like chicken soup to someone who has good memories of chicken soup?”
Ophelia nods.
“What about burnt toast?”
Ophelia chuckles aloud. “I can’t imagine burnt toast being someone’s favorite, but, yes, it would give off the smell of burnt toast."

"You might think you're in love with me, but it's not the same thing as loving me. In-love is short-term. It only lasts until the thrill is gone. Loving someone lasts forever."
I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the series. This received mostly positive reviews from Amazon (a few people said it was strange, LOL that's exactly what I liked about it! It was different!)
