Zenka - Alison Brodie

5 Stars!

ABOUT THE BOOK -
Devious, ruthless, and loyal.

Zenka is a capricious Hungarian with a dark past.

When cranky London mob boss, Jack Murray, saves her life she vows to become his guardian angel – whether he likes it or not. Happily, she now has easy access to pistols, knives and shotguns.

Jack discovers he has a son, Nicholas, a male nurse with a heart of gold. Problem is, Nicholas is a wimp.

Zenka takes charges. Using her feminine wiles and gangland contacts, she will make Nicholas into the sort of son any self-respecting crime boss would be proud of. And she succeeds!

Nicholas transforms from pussycat to mad dog, falls in love with Zenka, and finds out where the bodies are buried – because he buries them. He’s learning fast that sometimes you have to kill, or be killed.

As his life becomes more terrifying, questions have to be asked:

How do you tell a mob boss you don’t want to be his son?

And is Zenka really who she says she is?

MY THOUGHTS -
Wow! Fantastic read! This was a great way to spend my holiday. This book was funny, a little creepy, heartwarming at times, while always keeping me on the edge of my recliner.

I fell so in love with all of these zany characters I was still thinking about them during dinner (and no, I don't read during dinner). I absolutely loved Nicholas. He was such a sweetie, a mixed up, naive, wimp of a sweetie, but you just can't help but fall for him! Zenka with her - hard shell on the outside soft in her core, was just wonderful. I loved getting to know the real her through her letters. But the big surprise was that I even loved Trevor and Jack! They were "the bad guys" but what great characters they were! Alison did a fantastic job with the character development.

Oh what a twisty pretzel this book turned out to be. Right in the middle of the book there was a small "awww" moment. It was subtle, quick, but sweet. Then just a mere couple chapters later there was an "Oh my gosh!" that soon had me connecting the dots.

Not really your traditional "Christmas story" but the whole story did happen at Christmas time so a good one to read during the holiday season, especially if you are not all into the Christmas theme fluff.

If you think you are up for a bad-a$$ quirky mobster story that will shock you and warm your heart at the same time - this is it! Just plain GREAT!
