ABOUT THE BOOK -

One father was murdered, and another convicted of his death. All because their children fell in love.

Nate Beckett has spent his life fighting wildfires instead of the lies and rumors that drove him from his Colorado home town. His mother begs him to come to Carlisle now that his father has been released from prison, but it isnā€™t until heā€™s sidelined by an injury that heā€™s forced to return and face his past. But that means facing Brenna too.

Fourteen years ago, Nate was in love with the preacher's daughter. When Pastor Strickland discovered Brenna had defied him to sneak out with Nate, the fight between Strickland and Nate's drunken dad was loudā€”and very public. Strickland was found murdered later that night, and everyone accused Roy Beckett. When the church burned down, people assumed it was Nate getting even for his fatherā€™s conviction. He let the rumors fly and left Carlisle without looking back.

Now, Brenna is stunned to learn that the man convicted of murdering her father has been pardoned. The events of that night set her life on a bad course, and sheā€™s dealing with a brutal custody battle with her ex and his new wife where heā€™s using lies and his familyā€™s money to sway the judge. Sheā€™s barely hanging on, and sheā€™s turned to alcohol to cope. Shame and fear consume her.

As they deal with the presentā€”including new information about that fateful night and a wildfire thatā€™s threatening their townā€”their past keeps igniting. Nate is the steady force Brenna has so desperately needed. But sheā€™ll have to learn to trust him again first.

Read an excerpt:

I woke up in a blinding bright room, my clothes off and something clamped to my face. I tried to reach it, but I couldnā€™t bend my right arm, and my hand stung. An IV was taped to my other hand, but I moved carefully and touched the thing over my face.
An oxygen mask. I tried to sit up. ā€œWhat happened?ā€
T-bird came to my bedside, a sheen of smoky sweat still soiling his face. ā€œNate, lie back, man.ā€
ā€œThe fire,ā€ I said. ā€œNeed to get back. My men.ā€
ā€œTheyā€™re still there. Making progress. But youā€™re not going anywhere near a fire for a month or so.ā€
I took the mask off and coughed a little, but managed to catch my breath. ā€œA month?ā€
ā€œYep. Second degree burns on 20 percent of your body. Some of the burns are deep.ā€
It came back to me, the event that had gotten me here.
ā€œThe family. Were they injured?ā€
ā€œNot a scratch or burn. Turns out it was a U.S. Senator from Kansas. He says youā€™re a hero.ā€
ā€œYou know I had no choice. They were in the pathā€”ā€
ā€œTake the praise where you can get it, man. We donā€™t get that much.ā€
I looked at my right side. My right arm was bandaged, and so was my side and down my right leg to the point where my boots had stopped the flames. Second degree wasnā€™t so bad, I told myself. Third degree would have been brutal. Iā€™d be able to leave the hospital soon. Iā€™d heal.
ā€œI wonā€™t need a month,ā€ I said.
ā€œYes, you will. They canā€™t let you go back. Doctorā€™s orders. Youā€™re grounded until he releases you.ā€
I managed to sit up, but it was a bad idea. The burns pulling on my skin reminded me why I shouldnā€™t. ā€œI canā€™t be grounded during fire season. Are you crazy? I need to be there. You donā€™t have enough men as it is.ā€
ā€œSorry, Nate. It is what it is. Why donā€™t you go home to Carlisle for a while? Take it easy.ā€
Go home? Pop had just been pardoned, and he and my mom were trying to navigate the reunion. Though she would love to have me home, I didnā€™t know if I was up to it. My father could be challenging, and fourteen years of prison hadnā€™t done him any favors.

MY THOUGHTS -
Oh I have not read a Terri Blackstock book in a long time - way overdue!
I read the whole "Cape Refuge" series and loved it. I also read "If I Run" and it was one of the best book I have read! I really need to read the other tow books in the series!
Anyway... it was so great to get the chance to read another one of her books, and to have it be this good!

Oh man! How to even describe this book. I am always a sucker for a story about a custody battle since I went through one myself with my now 30 yr old daughter. This story did hit home and definitely tugged on some heartstrings. Brenna was such a strong and amazing woman. I loved her instantly. And of course, Nate was equally amazing!  ;-)

Such a suspenseful story! When you hear the words "custody battle" you think sappy, tears, heartfelt, well it was heartfelt but it is anything but sappy and I did not shed one single tear! I know amazing, right? I think it was just because it was so suspenseful I was hanging on every word!

I had never considered Terri Blackstock as one of my favorite writers, but I think she is going on the top of my list now!
