Mel and Paul, like many modern couples, seem to have it all. But beneath the thin veneer of a successful, happy life trouble has eaten away the once-strong foundation of their relationship. She is unreasonable, he is passive, so much is unsaid - just a few of their many problems.
But will any of this really matter in the end? Mel doesn't know it yet, but she has this night, and only this one final night, to figure out herself, their marriage, and how she would truly feel with it all gone.

Wow wow wow! This is an AMAZING read! I think I still have chillbumps from reading this, I do know that I still have tear stains down my face. What an amazing short story! This story grips you right from the start with its smart, thoughtful and intense dialog, then ends in a "train-wreck" that will leave you emotionally drained.
I don't normally go for short stories because they always leave me wanting more. But... this one is just enough! Not too short, not too long, its perfect!

Emmy Rane is married at nineteen, a mother by twenty. Trapped in a life with a husband she no longer loves, Baby is her only joy. Then one sunny day in September, Emmy takes a few fateful steps away from her baby and returns to find her missing. All that is left behind is a yellow sock.
Fourteen years later, Sophie, a home-schooled, reclusive teenage girl is forced to move frequently and abruptly from place to place, perpetually running from what her mother calls the "No Good." One afternoon, Sophie breaks the rules, ventures out, and meets Joey and his two aunts. It is this loving family that gives Sophie the courage to look into her past. What she discovers changes her world forever. . . .

Oh my gosh, I loved this story! Right up until the end. In fact I loved every page except the last one. This is such a beautifully written book. It is more like Prose and Poetry that a novel. It really flowed nicely. I was hooked on the very first page. I felt the character development right away. I loved Emmy (the mom) I liked the way the Author chose to portray her as simple minded. It made her innocent and loveable and I really really felt her pain and loss. I also loved Sophie (the daughter), her adventurous spirit, her willingness to try things and venture out and not be intimidated. Another character I loved and would have loved to seen more of was Arlen (the Hobo) what he did for Emmy was so kind and almost unheard of these days.
This book was full of AWWW moments!
So what was it about the end - It didn't end!!! It had what I call - a non-ending. Could it have hurt to write to write 2 more pages? Some people like to be kept wondering... I do not! I almost want to write the Author and ask what happens.
I received this book from Egmont USA at Netgalley as a download for my nook.

There are two things twenty-nine-year-old Jackie Donovan asks God for: an honest, wonderful man to marry, and to own a bed-and-breakfast in the Outer Banks region. In the meantime, Jackie works for Lighthouse Views magazine, writing articles about other local business owners, and intrepidly goes on the blind dates set up by her well-meaning but oh-so-clueless relatives. There's one specific property Jackie dreams of purchasing: the Bailey Place, a fabulous old home where Jackie spent many happy childhood afternoons, a place that has now fallen into disrepair because of its outrageous price tag. When Jackie meets handsome Davis Erickson, who holds the key to the Bailey Place, Jackie is sure God has answered both her prayers. But as Jackie learns some disturbing details about Davis's past, she begins to question her own motivation. Will she risk her long-held dreams to find out the truth?

I loved the cover of this book!!!!! That's what made me want to read it in the first place. And then that it took place on Cape Hatteras, well its just a given that it will be a great book right? WRONG. I really wanted to love this story as much as I loved the cover, but it was slow and boring and just not going anywhere for me. Towards the middle it did slightly pick up, but not fast enough. Even though  last half was much much better than the first half, it still seemed to move in slow motion for me. I was happy enough with the way it ended, I like my happy endings!
My favorite lines from the book - "I think about how God must rate our success and decide it has to be on much different terms. Jesus choose twelve disciples to hang out with, and had they lived today, I don't think any of their names would appear in Fortune 500 magazine"
All in all - not a bad book, just not one of my favorites.

  3. Interesting books. I didn't really like the cover to Hatteras Girl. Something about her feet is just distracting ;)

  4. Another blogger reviewed You Are My Only and she liked it too. It's not something I'd pick up based on the cover alone but with the good reviews and all... maybe I will!

  5. You Are My Only doesn't end? I hate when books do that. Makes me hesitant to start reading my copy.
