After The End - Group Discussion!

Hopefully you have all read at least through chapter 20. There are still a couple of people I have not heard from, so maybe they will join us this time around.,

For those of you who have read ahead - please only answer using thru chapter 20. (Please no spoilers).

Here are your questions for thought -

1. How do you like the book so far?
I am loving the book. It is not what I expected! And I like that. There are little surprises around every corner.

2. What do you think of the characters?
I love the characters. But I especially love them, Miles and Juneau, now that they are together! They are hilarious together! I couldn't get a feel for Juneau's personality at first but now that she is with Miles I love her - she is snarky! I love the way she makes fun of him in her mind, LOL.

3. This book starts out reminding me of the TV show "Revolution" and turns into "The Village" (one of my favorite movies!), then... it turned into Mulan! With her cutting her hair and pretending to be a boy (another of my fav movies)..
What does this book remind you of?

4. What do you think about the paranormal parts - being able to conjure, and the Yara - what do you think that is?
I like the para parts because I love reading those kinds of books! So that is just another nice added touch for me. I am really wondering about "The Yara" though and can't wait to find out.

This is a quote from the book -
"My brain hurts. I am so out of my comfort zone that I might as well be in the Amazon, swimming with piranhas."

5. You finish the sentence -
I am so far out of my comfort zone I might as well be _____________.
eating a hamburger on the crowded streets of NYC! (I'm a vegetarian).

6. Describe a scenario that could cause mass hysteria and possibly the end of life as we know it!
Running out of coffee!
Everyone running around frantically searching for the last beans that can be ground. Black market coffee, and trading them for diamonds and gold - and a k-cup! Don't even go there, you would have to be a millionaire to get one of those.
As coffee slowly runs out people start to not function properly, everyone gets headaches from caffeine withdrawal, people start falling asleep on the job, if they are even able to get out of bed in the morning. All industry and business start to shut down.
This is not a world I want to live in!

Any other comment about the book you would like to add?
Any questions you have?
What the heck is going on? Is this truly like the village where everyone is being deceived, living a lie? And is Whit in on it?

And for an add bonus - this is our theme song -
Its the End of the World as We Know it - REM (I happen to be a huge fan of REM)

Comments

  1. 1. How do you like the book so far?
Absolutely LOVE it!!! Such an unexpected twist!

    2. What do you think of the characters?
I think they are so funny! They both have their independence laced with sarcasm. My kind of characters! I can't wait to see their relationship pan out.

    3. What does this book remind you of?
When Juneau was looking down on the city for the first time, I immediately thought of The Village. And then I was explaining the book to friends of mine, and they said "so it's like the village?" haha

    4. What do you think about the paranormal parts - being able to conjure, and the Yara - what do you think that is?
I love the paranormal parts! That's the best part of the plot! I can't wait to find out more about the Yara, what it is and if Whit is in on this! My initial thought was that Whit sent Juneau out on her hunt to save her from being captured because he could foresee it coming, but now I wonder if he is in on a more elaborate scheme.

    5. You finish the sentence -
I am so far out of my comfort zone I might as well be _____________.
"moshing at a heavy metal show"

    6. Describe a scenario that could cause mass hysteria and possibly the end of life as we know it!
A few weekends ago, Facebook had gone down for a few hours causing thousands of people to call 911 in a state of panic.....
My first thought was "Are you freakin kidding me! How stupid can people be!!!"
But my second thought was... Wouldn't it be funny if Mark Zuckerberg just one day decided to screw with everyone and shut down facebook for good! People would click their little facebook logo only to find a screen that said "web page not found". Oh the mass hysteria that would ensue!! Can you imagine?

Any other comment about the book you would like to add? Just that I am slightly disappointed that this isn't an end of the world book, but I am very much enjoying the plot that it has turned into.

Any questions you have? So many!

What the heck is going on? Is this truly like the village where everyone is being deceived, living a lie? And is Whit in on it?
Here is my theory. I think these "star burst kids" are some kind of an experiment. That they were created somehow and taken to a very remote place to refine their powers and possibly breed more. Why? I don't know.

I finished the first 20 chapters the first day! So now I can finally continue reading!!!

    1. Ooo good theory on the starburst kids experiment.

And yeah shutting Facebook down prob would be the end of life for quite a few people!

moshing at a heavy metal show - haha funny I can picture Jen doing just that and being right at home!

I am so glad you are loving the book. I too am looking forward to the next 20 chapters.

What do you think of my theme song?

  2. 1. How do you like the book so far?
I’m enjoying it BUT I do think it’s mislabeled. It shouldn’t really be labeled post-apocalyptic. I’m sure this is part of the reason After the End is getting mixed reviews. It’s not what it says it is so people don’t get what they want from the book.

    2. What do you think of the characters?
Juneau’s cluelessness is entertaining as is Miles’ reactions to that cluelessness. I also think Poe is a fun addition to the story.

    3. What does this book remind you of?
    Nothing really.

    4. What do you think about the paranormal parts - being able to conjure, and the Yara - what do you think that is?
I didn’t like the whole Yara thing in the beginning but it doesn’t bother me as much now. It’s part of the mystery of what the heck is going on.

    5. You finish the sentence -
I am so far out of my comfort zone I might as well be _____________.
a social butterfly, the center of attention at a rich, fancy ball.

    6. Describe a scenario that could cause mass hysteria and possibly the end of life as we know it!
Wendy, I love your coffee scenario. Ashley, one can only hope that they do shut Facebook down someday. I think chocolate all of the world being tainted and inedible could cause mass (female) hysteria. Then the females would turn on each other…and men of course. All hell would break loose.

    1. OH! I thought of a general comment. Village dogs being murdered and then Juneau having to leave her dogs ;( not cool Amy Plum. Not cool.

      Delete
    2. Yeah I was very surprised she just left the dogs, but they were a target. I wonder if they show up later in the story.

      Delete
    3. And yeah I think Facebook should just disappear from existence, I think it would be quite funny actually!

      Delete
    4. Wait... Without chocolate what would women do when they got their periods?
There would be mass murders for sure.

    6. Um actually you jumped ahead a little the bird doesn't show up for a few chapters :-/

    7. Revised comment to remove my oopsie:

I'm hoping for a happy reunion with the pooches.

    8. I think they have to label it post-apoc. because otherwise you would know it was going to twist.

Funny that you chose social butterfly as out of your comfort zone and I chose heavy metal as mine! We swapped!

I wasn't too fond of the dog murders either :( she could have left that part out.

Hmmm Jenn, who is Poe? Reading ahead are we?

  3. I have a question for you (you being anyone in the read-along)

If you were Juneau and found out that practically your whole world was a lie where would you go after finishing your quest?

would you go back to Denali and live off the land? Bring new comforts back for a slightly updated existence in Denali? Would you live somewhere else, a fresh start?

    1. Hmm good question.
I think I would feel so out of place in the "real world" that I might just go back and live off the land... After acquiring an iPod, iPhone (but who would I call right? So scratch that) just the iPod.
Unless of course I hooked up with someone like Miles, fell madly in love and he convinced me to live in the city with him... NOT!

      Delete
    2. I think I maybe would live closer to 'the real world' but definitely not directly in a town or city

      Delete
    3. Hmm somewhere beautiful, like a beach or a mountain side. Far away from a city. Maybe we should all go live in Denali haha

  4. Okay...I'm not looking at the questions or any of the answers. I'm only on chapter 13. I had little time to read with all this traveling. I am waiting for my flight to go home tonight. So I have some spare time to read :)

Just letting you know so you don't think I have forgotten.

How did the belly dancing go?????

    2. Vonnie! Hey girl! I saw the video of your solo... beautiful!!! I have started belly dancing again and I found this great online teacher from Berlin! I'll have to show you so you can let me know what you think of her.

Cant wait for you to join the discussion!

  5. 1. How do you like the book so far?
I'm not sure if I like it or not. I find the concept interesting but I'm having a hard time staying focused on it. It might be because I'm doing so much right now in my personal life.

    2. What do you think of the characters?
I love how independent Juneau is and knows how to take care of herself. I'm debating whether or not I like Miles.

    3. This book starts out reminding me of the TV show "Revolution" and turns into "The Village" (one of my favorite movies!), then... it turned into Mulan! With her cutting her hair and pretending to be a boy (another of my fav movies)..
Hmmm...I do see the Mulan connection because not only does she cut her hair, but she does this for her father.

    4. What do you think about the paranormal parts - being able to conjure, and the Yara - what do you think that is?
This is very interesting. I was a little confused at first what "conjured" meant but after finding out what it was, I thought it was pretty neat. I like the idea that Juneau connects with others while making them her oracles.

    5. You finish the sentence -
I am so far out of my comfort zone I might as well be _____________.
singing on stage in front of an audience.

    6. Describe a scenario that could cause mass hysteria and possibly the end of life as we know it!
Well, if people freaked out when Twinkies were being discontinued then I agree with Wendy when it comes to coffee. Another way to cause hysteria is if the Internet stops working indefinitely.

    Hmmm...any other comment/questions?
Well, I am intrigued as to what secrets her family had and why they made her believe that WWIII happened. I want to know what it has to do with her.
